aka White Rose of York

Alba. An ancient rose AKA White Rose of York which can be traced back to the 15th century. The summer blooms are double, fragrant and creamy white followed by orange hips. Foliage is a pale grey-green. Always a pleasing sight when in full flower. Disease resistant and needs little pruning

NB Rosa x alba 'Semi-Plena' is also known as The White Rose of York.

Alba. Introduced to Britain by the Romans this historic rose has pure white semi-double flowers followed by attractive hips in autumn. Sweetly scented. Suitable for hedging or can be used as a small climber. A simple yet beautiful rose. AKA The White Rose of York.

NB. Rosa x alba Maxima is also known as the White Rose of York.

Gallica. An old French rose which is very early flowering. Blooms of deep lilac mauve that fade to paler shades of mauve and grey. Beautifully formed flowers with a strong fragrance. Just delightful. This rose is found growing wild in the countryside in many parts of NZ. 1837.

Gallica. An upright shrub like Rose with attractive grey-green foliage and very fragrant blooms that appear in summer. The blooms are flat and quartered and are a pretty blend of pink, grey and mauve. Does best in a warm sheltered position. From the mid 19th century.

Rugosa. Bred in France this is an old fashioned rose with scented semi-double flowers of rich magenta pink. The foliage is lush dark green and heavily veined. In a good year the flowers are followed by dark red ornamental hips. Repeat flowers but not continuously. Shows good disease resistance.

Rugosa. An outstanding Rose that repeats well with flowers that have an overwhelming fragrance. The blooms are clear white and semi-double. Always admired in the garden. Tolerant of poor soils and light shade. Excellent large hips in autumn. Can be used as a robust hedge. 1892.

Bourbon. This rose grows into a slender upright shrub with mid green foliage. The buds are tinted with crimson but open to reveal pure white, highly fragrant blooms with perfect symmetry. Generous with regular clusters of bloom throughout the season. 1867 France.

Gallica. The reputation and popularity of this lovely old fashioned rose are well deserved. The globular dark red buds open to rich purple sweetly scented flowers of a velvety texture. Mainly summer flowering. Abundant dark green foliage and very few thorns. 1840. Deciduous

China. A perfect little button-hole rose, simply charming. Almost always in flower with small perfect pink blooms that open from long pointed buds. Fragrance is light, sweet and spicy. Relatively few thorns and healthy foliage. This climbing sport is quite vigorous and will tolerate some shade. 1894.

Alba. We don't know the origin or age of this rose but we do know that is really lovely when it flowers in summer. The blooms are set on reddish stems against grey-green foliage. They are sweetly scented. softest pink, open and cupped. Red hips follow the blooms. Tolerant and hardy.
